Resiliency and Why It's Important to Heart-Centered Living

COVID-19 has brought our modern world to her knees and created deep and profound changes in how we think about ourselves, our lives, our communities, our government, our planet, and our relationship with one another. The spread of the corona virus and the way a tiny microbe has wrecked havoc on humanity calls into question how the world will look like after all this has passed. One thing we can be sure of is that the world as we know it will never be the same because, like the the economic meltdown of the great depression, the two world wars, 9/11, and the financial crisis of 2008, this pandemic unravels the very fabric upon which our society and her institutions have been built. The very core of our daily life on the planet has been ripped apart and anyone who witnesses the carnage that the pandemic has caused will not be able to see our world and our relationship to it in the same way again.

This is the time to draw upon our deepest reservoirs of resiliency and strength that will define who we ultimately become once the pandemic passes. As individuals and members of our communities and societies and humanity as a whole, we will need to build  a new world order and reclaim a part of our humanity that is kind, loving, more gentle and more heart-centered. We need to be strong and reach for the light; to not let fear define our moments but to allow courage to develop our character; and to persevere through this with the knowledge that we can emerge on the other end filled with hope, peace, and a reorientation towards a better future for us all.

In this interview, recorded at the end of January 2020, I talked to Nancy Legere about resiliency and the human ability to recover and thrive. Nancy is the author of a wonderful book, Life in the Shadows, which takes the reader through her emotional and psychological struggles of having suffered a rape at the age of 7 years old. Despite that, Nancy learnt to accept and rely on the generosity, kindness, and friendship that people extended to her as she got better and recovered from that childhood trauma. Nancy's story is a story of resilience and strength and inspires us to reach for our best selves and live our best lives. Her story is a story we need to hear so that we come out of this pandemic more hopeful and open to a better more heart-centered future. I hope this conversation speaks to you and comforts you in these challenging times.
